Dew Point vs. Relative Humidity for Commuters

Two numbers on every forecast claim to describe "how muggy it feels" — only one of them actually does.

The Problem With Relative Humidity

Relative humidity (RH) tells you how much moisture is in the air relative to the maximum the air could hold at its current temperature. That "relative to" is the catch: the exact same amount of actual moisture in the air can produce wildly different RH readings depending on temperature alone, because warm air can hold far more water vapor than cold air before reaching saturation.

This is why a 45°F morning showing 90% relative humidity feels crisp and merely damp, while a 90°F afternoon at the same 90% RH feels almost unbearable. The moisture content driving that "sticky" sensation is completely different between the two, even though the RH percentage is identical. Relative humidity, on its own, simply isn't a reliable comfort indicator without also knowing the temperature.

Why Dew Point Is the Better Metric

Dew point is the temperature the air would need to cool to in order to become fully saturated and start condensing into dew or fog. Unlike relative humidity, dew point is an absolute measure — it doesn't shift with the current air temperature the way RH does, which makes it a direct, comparable stand-in for how much actual moisture is in the air.

Because it's temperature-independent in that way, dew point maps consistently onto how muggy the air will actually feel against your skin. A given dew point feels roughly the same whether it's a spring afternoon or a summer morning, which is exactly what you want from a comfort metric.

The Mechanism Behind the Feeling

Human bodies cool themselves primarily through evaporating sweat. Evaporation only happens efficiently when the surrounding air can still absorb more moisture. A high dew point means the air is already saturated or close to it, so sweat evaporates slowly, your body's cooling system loses effectiveness, and the air feels heavy and stifling — regardless of what the thermometer or the RH percentage says on their own.

Dew point answers "how much actual moisture is in the air," which is the physical quantity your body responds to — relative humidity answers a different question entirely.

For day-to-day planning, dew point is more useful than RH in a few concrete ways:

When the dew point and air temperature are within a couple degrees of each other overnight, expect fog, dew-covered windshields, or both by morning — that near-zero gap is exactly the condensation threshold being crossed.

Relative humidity isn't useless — it's essential for understanding precipitation potential and how fast the air near the ground can saturate. But when the question is simply "will this morning feel muggy," dew point is the number worth glancing at first.
